David Hockney, "Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy" (detail), Lithograph, 1976, signed in pencil and numbered 35/96. To be sold at our upcoming hammer auction of Contemporary Art & Design on November 12th.
In the upcoming hammer auction of Contemporary Art & Design we are pleased to present a print department with several works by David Hockney. The legendary artist has achieved cult status over and over and again, most recently with a solo exhibition at Tate Britain and Centre Pompidou in 2017. In November 2018 his artwork “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)” from 1972 was sold for an incredible 90,3 million dollars, which makes him the first living artist to break the billion-dollar limit at auction.
Even though his paintings are sought-after, you should not underestimate his prints which can be regarded as its own universe. Already in his teens, he created lithographs, but he discovered and developed several other printing techniques during his time as a student at The Royal College of Art from 1959 to 1962. During his career he has refined, explored and developed several printing techniques – from classic copper etchings to creating works on his iPad. We are now looking for more prints by David Hockney to broaden the department and show the width of his graphic artistry.
David Hockney, "Tulips", etching and aquatint, 1973, signed in pencil and numbered 32/75, and "Celia", hard-ground etching and aquatint, 1969, signed in pencil and numbered Artist Proof (edition 75). Both etchings will be sold at this fall's upcoming hammer auction, Contemporary Art & Design.
